All about Paint
There's so much confusion about paint! Let's make it easy to understand.
There are many brands but four major names that share most of the market:
Sherwin-Williams
Benjamin Moore
Behr
Dulux
Start by Choosing the Type of Finish You Want and Need
Flat paint - Hides a lot of imperfections, which is why it's the paint builders and contractors use. HOWEVER, stains are harder to remove, they scuff and mark up easily, and constant rubbing or cleaning can result in paint coming off and/or spotting (burnishing). We recommended this finish only for ceilings.
Eggshell or Low Lustre - The most widely used nearly shine-free finish, all-purpose paint. It provides an relatively easy-to-clean, washable surface that's suited for most areas of a home, including bedrooms, family rooms.
Satin or Pearl - This has a slightly higher sheen, but not so much that's it's overbearing. It offers a much better protection and washability for higher traffic areas of a home, including hallways , kitchens, bathrooms, and trim.
Semi-Gloss- This high sheen paint offers great protection from stains, scuffs, and marks. Due to its higher gloss, it's recommended for small surfaces like trims and doors.
Then Choose the Brand
It's important to recognize that all the listed manufacturers produce paint products that range from lower quality to high quality. So, more important than the actual brand is to choose the higher quality paint lines. Why? because the difference between some of the cheap contractor grade and the higher quality paints is what's called "Volume Solids". That's the stuff that's left on your wall after the water or solvents evaporate. Lower volume solids will not hide the colour you are painting over very well because it's more transparent, like watered down paint. It's also more prone to wear. Higher solid content means better hiding, more durability, and richer colours.
At Craftsman Painting, we ensure a high quality finish that covers the previous paint, as well as minimizing brush strokes and roller marks by using a high quality paint that balances excellent hiding with a smooth finish. We also use professional quality brushes and rollers because we want to minimize visible brush strokes and stippling. Regardless of your choice of paint, we always apply two coats to ensure proper and full coverage.
Craftsman Painting can recommend the right choices and colours for your needs. We must admit to a preference for Sherwin Williams due to the consistent quality and ease of use.
We take pride in our work and your satisfaction.
